You see, in '93 it was Woo who was the outsider, with a post- Universal Soldier Van Damme being something of a golden boy.

Kino's UHD/Blu-ray combo pack has some botched audio on it, but a replacement program is in the works. When Binder's burnt corpse is discovered in the city, Detective Marie Mitchell (Kasi Lemmons) has no choice but to start investigating, but Chance finds something she doesn't when he comes across Binder's dogtags, pierced by what he knows was a bolt from a crossbow. The steelbook is beautifully glossed and embossed, aswell as like many other recent releases you get production cards, poster and a nice little production booklet with some very nice never before seen stills. She offers to pay Chance a few hundred dollars if he agrees to be her guide and help her find her old man. Back in the day when action movies were made properly and were R-Rated, lots of action and violence constantly throughout, plenty fights and high kicks, shoot-outs, chases, explosions, guns and not forgetting a cool cast of villains played by Lance Henriksen (Aliens) and Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy) Great story and well directed by John Woo who makes the movie very stylish with his own brand of slow-mo fights and camera shots and a cool soundtrack too.John Woo's touch is felt in virtually every single sequence, but the magic that made The Killer and Hard Boiled legendary action films is quite simply missing here. I particularly enjoyed the new program with stunt coordinator Billy Burton, whose take on the current state of the film industry is spot on.

It's a shame really, because there are some impressive DV tones, particularly in brake lights and street lighting, popping like this film has never popped before, but it's simply unwatchable. This is especially the case with the middle hunt scene and the climax in the parade float warehouse. Europe's busiest forums, with independent news and expert reviews, for TVs, Home Cinema, Hi-Fi, Movies, Gaming, Tech and more. Corrected copies are being produced and anyone who receives an early pressing can go here to request a replacement copy. Both copies were promoted at that time as being sourced from a “New 4K restoration of the unrated international cut of the film from the original camera negative.

Hard Target 2 Blu-Ray Bonus Disc - Gloss and Embossed Steelbook - Rigid slipcase with spot gloss detail - 40pp Production Notes book - 8x Lobby Cards - Double Sided Poster. Quality is fine otherwise, but as Kino is aware of this and making a replacement disc available, we'll reserve commenting on the quality in too much detail until one of those discs is in hand. The included Blu-ray contains the same audio commentary as well as quite a few other supplements starting with the excellent From Hard Boiled to Hard Target, a thirteen minute interview with John Woo where he talks about the differences between the Hong Kong and Hollywood systems, his thoughts on working with Chuck Pfarrer and with Van Damme (who he says really loved Hong Kong film), getting along with his producers (especially Sam Raimi), his personal love of Alain Delon's films and Van Damme's resembelnce to him from certain angles, the importance of making his actors look great, changes that were made to the dialogue during the shoot, borrowing from the end of Hard-Boiled for the ending of this movie, running into issues getting final approval after editing the film with Bob Murawski, having more creative freedom in Hong Kong than in Hollywood and what he learned about Hollywood and America from working on the film.

Score: Cast: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lance Henriksen, Arnold Vosloo, Yancy Butler, Kasi Lemmons, Chuck Pfarrer, Willie C. Yancy Butler is up next in the fifteen minute Hard Times In The Big Easy where she covers how she got her start as an actress, not knowing Van Damme or Woo before getting the role for the film, how much she liked the script, what it was like shooting in New Orleans and why she brought her mom along for the ride, riding horses with Wilford Brimley (who really got her horse going at a clip! The old Blu-ray - and even the older DVDs - all suffered from poor color saturation and an overall too bright and flat appearance with inconsistent black levels. On June 26, 2023, Universal Pictures (UK) will release a New 4K UHD + Blu-ray for John Woo and Jean-Claude Van Damme’s 1993 actioner Hard Target. On top of this Hard Target happens to be one of those films where the one-liners are really, really poor as well. Every action star has a peak film; that mega-blockbuster that defines their time on the silver screen. Woo's trademarks are all present and correct: yes, slo-mo and freeze-frame, but also doves (well, pigeons), two-handed gunplay, back-to-back confrontations (where two characters trade words as they reload, separated only by a thin partition), and the lead character anticipating the actions of others through reflections in mirrored objects.
