Dickinson was born to a successful family with strong community ties, she lived a mostly introverted and reclusive life. But neither is it a mere draft: the scraps represent the audacious pinnacle of Dickinson’s mingled verbal and graphic gifts. This exquisitely produced book [ The Gorgeous Nothings]—lovingly curated by Bervin and Werner—allows you to encounter Emily Dickinson’s ‘envelope poems’ in full-color facsimile for the first time.

The Dickinson scholar Domhnall Mitchell and others have suggested that “the layout of a Dickinson autograph is deliberate or motivated” in potentially every regard, from the capital letters of various sizes, to the spaces between letters and words and lines, to the marginalia, which are often crammed with variant choices of word or phrase. This small selection is taken from the complete volume of her ‘envelope poems,’ The Gorgeous Nothings: Emily Dickinson's Envelope Poems -- “gorgeous nothings” is a phrase from one of the poems, included in this book too. Higginson famously compared Dickinson’s hand to “fossil bird-tracks,” an insight about the shape and the saturation of her letters, and also about their flickering gait as they cross the white of the page. I have never seen a printing like this, with one page being an image of Dickinson’s handwritten scraps of paper and immediately next to it a minimal and more legible rendering of the poem in the same layout as the original envelope. If you use the back of a closed envelope, as Dickinson did in “A 496/497,” you get three squat triangles, like faces of a flattened jewel.

Their transcriptions allow us to read the texts, while the facsimiles let us see exactly what Dickinson wrote (the variant words, crossings-out, dashes, directional fields, spaces, columns, and overlapping planes). The cover is beautiful, the pages feel luxurious, the photographs feel so special, and it's all put together with incredible care. Most of the scraps remained in Amherst’s archive, curiosities sought out by tenacious Dickinson scholars but unknown to the public at large. It felt like a four star read to me simply because many of the ideas didn't feel finished or realized.Loved this publication, the juxtaposition of the original letters and how they looked was marvellous and interesting especially as a historian and (aspiring) palaeographer, though I imagine even non-historians find it fascinating. e é possível que a combinação de todos estes elementos sustente a delicadeza que encontro neste maravilhoso livro. These manuscripts on envelopes (recycled by the poet with marked New England thrift) were written with the full powers of her late, most radical period. It looked out over the family’s property on Main Street, in Amherst, Massachusetts, toward the Evergreens, her brother’s grand Italianate mansion, nestled among the pines a few hundred yards away.

Thomas Johnson, the editor of an important edition of her work, was so convinced that there were lost Dickinson letters in New England closets that, with the help of the poet James Merrill, a friend, he once contacted Dickinson through a Ouija board and asked her for a couple of hints. The shocks are in the words, with other, lingering, aftershocks following in the visual details of their settings. For too many years I’ve had an image of Emily as a perennial girl, never a woman, with genius of course but not emotions she showed in real life, only displaying them on the page; an image where she submissively sits behind her cross-barred bedroom window when she is not writing, imprisoned almost, perhaps by her father, occasionally looking out and ignoring the gawkers on the lawn below.
