The story also explores college stress and the whole college application race; how some teens are lucky and get in because of legacy, how some teens have to really 'standout', and how Black kids also face the pressure of being excellent following Obama's presidency. However, the elements of this novel that made it so utterly relatable for a young, pre-college audience were the same reasons why I couldn't get fully engaged in the story. A diverse cast of characters, racial tensions, and ethical dilemmas make this so much more than just a simple romance.

It isn't all light and fluffy though, as a decision made by one of our main protagonists turns the story on it's head. Although Henri wasn’t always the perfect protagonist, and definitely makes some mistakes, for the most part I agreed with the direction this story took and enjoyed the ride. One who’s extremely driven, but kind of realizes high school passed her by as she was studying, and at the end is wondering what was the magic elixir she seemed to miss out on. Charming As A Verb is a cute little romance filled with dogs, privileged students, and college stress.I think it’s definitely one that can find its audience if you enjoy a rom-com that explores some more serious themes, but it just was not for me. However, I really appreciated that with something that big, it wasn’t just brushed aside or neatly taken care of. While this might be a realistic portrayal, it seems to me that if the gender roles were switched, this would bug more people.

This reminds me a little of The Map from Here to There by Emery Lord but this sounds like a better read. The ending is probably one of my favorite ending from all the YA Contemporary Romance I've read this year. Henri’s experiences not only are extremely close to an experience I’ve only heard about, from friends, about those with immigrant parents and the weights of their dreams and expectations. He is the author of the memoir SURE, I'LL BE YOUR BLACK FRIEND, as well as the young adult novels CHARMING AS A VERB and the William C.

It shows his impending burnout and shines a light on the impossible standards forced on teens today.

He's able to blend in with any situation whilst keep his not so privileged side of him a secret, even from his best friend Ming who has a sneaker fetish! In Philippe’s funny debut, 16-year-old black French-Canadian Norris Kaplan must navigate life and love in Austin, Tex. Which we thought would make us happy, or fulfill us, but end up having origins that don’t belong to us. He could be that stereotypical energetic puppy best friend, but he’s very genuine and kindhearted and it really shows on paper. From both the academic and the college pressure, but also the wistfulness as if there’s a clock ticking, where everything will irreversibly changed. Young Adult contemporaries don’t often surprise me anymore, but this one is definitely a pleasant surprise. With amazing black leads, a stunning love story, and wonderful characters that tug at your heartstrings, I wholeheartedly recommend this book!
