Sometimes our need to achieve a thing causes us to lose sight of the bigger picture, we burn ourselves out with rage or frustration leaving us with nothing. As she struggles to deal with the horrific and ceaseless deaths surrounding her, she takes sanctuary in receiving letters from her oldest friend, Onome, who is studying law at Kings College in London. A Letter Away From Asaba is an amazing book, one that is able to transport the reader back in time so well, but also easy to read and understand in the modern day. A descendant of colonist who belittle our continent and undermine our experiences to doge responsibility for their despicable actions.

I would have liked some more background about their relationship together and how they have grown - we get to know them when they are adults and see that relationship go through ups and downs, which is great.I think that this is the perfect book for educating people on Asaba as well as the other important topics covered in this book such as covering up from the British Government and Onome’s experiences as one of few black students at the university. The podcast host Claudia Efemini, author, history undergrad and dear friend asked us questions that really challenged Esther and I to reflect on our experiences at The University of Edinburgh. I did not know a lot about the Nigerian civil war before reading, and it honestly opened my eyes to the injustice censorship can cause. Both characters were bold, courageous, and brilliantly written; they accomplished much more than individuals at their (fictional) time were able to.

If you would like to attend the launch and hear me speak, please reserve your spot using the Eventbrite link: https://lnkd. A massive thank you to Deborah Alhassan for organising the book launch and Paula Melissa Ugochukwu for hosting it. Not long ago did I do a podcast episode with a close friend of mine Esther Akinyomi, for One Edinburgh (an organisation that aims to support international students navigate their way around the UK higher education system). Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. The book follows two lifelong friends, Chioma and Onome, as they investigate the atrocities that led to the massacre in their hometown of Asaba and the obstacles they encounter. This is far from easy, and they await a series of hurdles in ways they least expect that, in contrast, try to ensure that the victims of the massacre die in vain. A Letter Away from Asaba is an epistolary novella that speaks on history, that has effected so many, through letters sent by our main protagonists Chioma and Onome.

Fast-forward to today and I am set to publish a book dedicated to the Asaba massacre, seeking to respond to this gap in scholarship and global awareness. This was all brought together by another amazing friend, undergrad in International Relations and International Law, ACS (African-Caribbean Soicety) President and many other amazing things Rutendo Hoto. International Women’s Day also gives us an opportunity to recognise the inner and outer work we all need to do to achieve gender equality for all women, regardless of where they come from. Overall, this is a great book to educate yourself on the Nigerian Civil War and understand the effects that it has on individual people. Claudia Efemini is the author of 'A Letter Away From Asaba' and a current History and Politics student at the University of Edinburgh (2021-2025).I am thrilled to have been selected to do an exchange year at McGill University as part of The University of Edinburgh's study abroad programme.
