Description

Written with Paul Hayward, it charts his career in the 13-man code and his extraordinary fundraising efforts for motor neurone disease (MND). The plan for our fourth challenge, the '7 in 7 in 7 Challenge' is to run 7 ultra marathons in 7 cities in 7 days with an extra mile each day that will show our support for the MND community. A world class rugby league player, an excellent leader, a fabulous coach but all in all the best of friends. Perhaps rightly, and not surprisingly, Kev attributes the majority to his fundraising efforts - but it’s not told for self-appreciation or back-patting.

He was awarded an OBE in January 2022 and given a special award at BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022. Told with Sinfield's characteristic warmth, dry wit and inspirational leadership, The Extra Mile is the story of an astonishing life, of an enduring friendship, of perseverance against the most difficult of challenges, and of a remarkable, humble human being who has defied the odds. He was and is close friends with Rob Burrow from their time together at Leeds Rhinos to the present day and through that friendship has become recognised for far more than his sporting career. He was to become a league legend: 521 games for Leeds Rhinos, a 13-year England career, 14 Great Britain caps, seven Grand Final wins, appearance and scoring records galore, runner-up to Andy Murray in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards, even the first RL player to appear on Desert Island Discs, when he chose a self-propelled treadmill as his luxury item. He earned 61 caps for Scotland during a successful playing career, represented the British and Irish Lions on their successful tour to South Africa in 1997, and won championships with his two club sides, Melrose and Newcastle Falcons.A very British hero, the unassuming yet utterly superb Kevin Sinfield – rugby league great turned rugby union coach turned charity fundraiser, all while carrying a torch for the true meaning of sport and friendship. As my first autobiography that I am reading, I can only respect this man because he seriously ran over 60km everyday for a week straight and then went for a 101 mile marathon to fund enough money for his friend and all the other people affected by MND. For the MND community, every second counts and we will be making the most of every step on this challenge to raise awareness, funds and support for that community.

Thank you for donating to this challenge and for your continued support in raising even more to help our cause - we are keen to see the donations and where they end up.

We know the human body can adapt remarkably to physical stress but these runs were gobsmacking distances, bonkers challenges to normal folk.
