And that's fine, because this is a far more rewarding and subtle book than all the blaring about 'Shocking Twists!

The Daily Telegraph 's Michael Hogan gave the first episode three stars out of five, noting that: " In the Dark did show promise and could yet come good. Maybe, but the sasquatches whom the volcano displaced contributed to the statistics, too, if only out of self-defense. Slowly but surely they’re recovering from the trauma of what happened in Polesford and getting used to the idea that Helen’s baby is probably not Paul’s. At the outset of Billingham’s slow-burning 13th Tom Thorne novel (after 2014’s The Bones Beneath), the detective inspector’s girlfriend, Det.The one character I did want to see more of was Theo, the young gang member who has dreams of bettering his life and escaping from the sink estate with his girlfriend and baby son, but who gets caught up in peer pressure and fast-moving violence. We’re big Billingham fans and have high hopes for the series, so let’s hope the Beeb can do it justice. Fortunately, the pace of the story and the high action level prevented me from worrying about this too much. Mark Billingham will be at Bloody Scotland Crime Writing Festival, Stirling, September 8-10 (bloodyscotland. It's supposed to work as a tease, a bit of mystery - which of the characters we're introduced to are involved in this crime?

But that future is cruelly snatched away from them as a shocking incident sees Paul die and a devastated Helen forced to expose herself to the dangerous world of organised crime. In The Dark is not only a top-notch mystery and a convincing portrait of crack-dealing on south London estates but a moving exploration of grief.

the heroine is conducting an investigation into the death of her boyfriend, but she is constantly saying how ridiculous and nonsensical the investigation is. She lends the character some believably moody cynicism and lo-fi gloom that’s as realistic as it is relatable.

Told from multiple points-of-view and full of red herrings, the story begins in the London suburbs with a gang initiation.Despite a blazing row in which Helen reveals to Paul her history of abuse and affair (and MyAnna Buring shows off her not inconsiderable acting chops), the two team up to chase the culprit down to a nearby pumping station where Poppy, the kidnapped girl, is being held – a mission which sees the killer meet a very sticky end indeed. As with the first two-parter of BBC One’s In the Dark, this second double header is all about the emotional strength of a pregnant detective when faced with tremendous grief, trauma and some seriously nasty characters. One life is wiped out and three more are changed forever: the young man whose finger was on the trigger, the ageing gangster planning a deadly revenge, and the pregnant woman who struggles desperately to uncover the truth. There is a real deft subtlety to her performance that belies the stereotype of a bereaved and damaged woman.
