If you've read a few Picoult books, you probably do like I do---scoff at the implausibilities and the truly lame stuff, but devour them all the same. It is one of those books that has you from the first page and stays with you long after you have finished. How might it be different without certain plot elements, such as Jacob’s love of forensics or Emma’s single mother status, or Oliver’s professional inexperience? She falls asleep on the car ride home while I am still singing along to Hanna Montana songs on her CD, and I carry her upstairs to her bedroom.

There are footprints that match the victim’s one remaining sneaker, and another set that apparently were made by the jogger (whose alibi already eliminated him as a suspect) – but the perp either brushed his own footprints away or flew in for the kill. Jacob’s literal reading of the world can be, depending on the circumstances, either very funny or very frustrating. One boy gets up every day at 5:45 AM – even during summer vacation or snow days – because that’s his routine during the school year. For me, being in social situations – whether that’s school, or Thanksgiving dinner, or in line at the movies – is like moving to Lithuania when you haven’t studied Lithuanian. Suddenly, Jacob and his family, who only want to fit in, feel the spotlight shining directly on them.

Pinham had to leave school for three weeks when she got shingles, and she couldn’t tell you beforehand? Remember, this was back in 1995; the only experience I’d had with autism was Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man. This poor girl shouldn’t just tell that guy to go jump in a lake, she ought to slash all four of his car tires, and – “ Suddenly she pins her gaze on Theo. The tension that builds throughout the novel is occasionally alleviated by the jokes and puns the characters themselves make.

The sheets are covered with fluorescent pterodactyls and a remote-control T-rex lies on its side on the floor. As a mother it makes you appreciate the health of your children, things we take for granted don’t come so easily to others. The view from within a person with Asperger’s is very well described, and Jacob’s frustration with the inability of those around him to recognise the truth is expertly portrayed.Once, when Jacob and I were little, we were playing in a pond near our house with an inflatable boat. The teacher made a popular boy wear fake glasses so I’d have someone to connect with, but as it turned out, he didn’t really want to talk about whether archaeopteryx should be categorized as a prehistoric bird or a dinosaur. Or when I hid the toothpaste cap so that he couldn’t put it back on when he was done brushing his teeth.

As a person with Asperger's I am dismayed with Picoult's portrayal of an adult with Asperger's Syndrome. Very powerful, at times very disturbing and shows just how much we take for granted and assume, how we judge people from their behaviours, how strange our language is and how much of a battle life can be for people who have Asperger's and those who love and care for them. House Rules was no exception, and I found myself thinking about the Hunt family long after I shut the book. The guy couldn’t stop staring, but then again, it’s not every day you hear a preschooler pronounce the word GASTROENTEROLOGY, clear as a bell. BTW, I did give the book 2 stars because if I removed the whole Asperger's element I thought the mystery was quite interesting with a fun little twist to the solution.
