When the unnamed narrator, a reputable physician and rising MP, meets mysterious, compelling Anna Barton, ``the shock of recognition passed through my body like a powerful current. Lady Saatchi wrote the New York Times bestselling novel Damage, which was the basis for the 1992 film of the same name, directed by Louis Malle and starring Jeremy Irons, Juliette Binoche and Rupert Graves. Luis Malle made a stunningly successful film with Juliette Binoche and Jeremy Iron in the key roles. For the first time in an outwardly lucky life, he feels passion and joy, emotions that a longtime ``happy'' marriage and fatherhood have never generated. We believe that the untried soul, trapped in its young prison, might have flown free and known the joy that we still seek.

As well writing novels, she was a `poetry evangelist' and her Josephine Hart Poetry Hour at the British Library inspired two edited poetry books: Catching Life By the Throat and Words that Burn.

In a review for Kirkus Reviews, it was said that "this spare, dreamlike first novel comes festooned with blurbs from the likes of Ruth Rendell and Iris Murdoch, and no wonder, for it's an unforgettable tale of sexual obsession and its calamitous consequences", while being described as "Elliptical, haunting, and altogether extraordinary.

But his life lacks passion, and his aching emptiness drives him to an all-consuming, and ultimately catastrophic, relationship with his son’s fiancée. There are those born in rolling countryside who are really only at ease in the intense and busy loneliness of the city. A quick read of the jacket blurb and a couple of choice quotes from the book and you know that this is car-crash reading – horrible, uncomfortable but you keep turning the pages nonetheless. Readers may find the prose overly mannered, however, and the novel more successful as an emotional tour de force than as a credible study of human nature. The MP runs down the stairs completely naked, finding Martyn dead, sprawled out on the ground floor.Just then the MP is casually introduced to his grown-up son's enigmatic girlfriend Anna and helplessly falls for her. Josephine Hart has managed to create a portrait of psychological and erotic obsession that is so compelling as, for a brief moment, to suck all the oxygen out of the air. Those who are lucky enough to find it ease like water over a stone, onto its fluid contours, and are home. For as long as it lasts, Martyn, his son, has no idea that his father is having an extramarital affair with his girlfriend (and later fiancée), and Anna does not seem to mind being a young man's partner and simultaneously his father's lover and object of desire. This amazing short book is a profound essay not so much on the theme of “erotic obsession” as the author claims, but on the very nature of human attachment and the obsession with fusion with the other.
